Finished Book #5!

I've just sent off book #5, a book that features an Ugly Duckling heroine, a hero who doubts his own capacity for honor, and a villain.  All three are a major departure for me, which made for a wonderful challenge! I eagerly await my editor's response, and am taking full advantage of the free weekend to catch up on all the home tasks that have been neglected for far too long!

Task #1: Purchase a new computer!  I'm making the switch from PC to MAC, as waiting for my PC to load requires far too much time.  While at a writing retreat a couple of weekends ago, I had to wait FORTY minutes for it to reboot after it had frozen on me. Fortunately, I had a book to read to pass the time. But when under deadline, every precious minute counts and I can't afford to wait on technology.

Task #2: Take my incredibly supportive husband out for dinner and lavish him with my undivided attention. I firmly believe that any man married to an author possesses a thread of sainthood. What other male would be capable of picking up the household slack without complaint and yet still retain his good sense of humor? I am so blessed.

Task #3: Wade through the stack of bills and paperwork that has accumulated while I've been under my deadline crunch. It's amazing how paperwork reproduces whenever I dare to glance away; how can so much paper come into one home, especially when I do so many of my bills online? I'm aghast.

Task #4: Take an hour to grocery shop. Really. My teenage sons, like so many of their ilk, can survive on pizza, frozen burritos, and the occasional carrot with the best of them. But every once in a while, I really *must* stock the refrigerator with something other than milk, bread, and eggs.

Task #5: Steal a few moments to read a good book and refill the well. My Kindle's TBR list is topping out at over forty books - I simply CANNOT purchase more until I've read at least six of them!

New News is Good News!

It's been a busy few months - thus, the dearth of scintillating blog posts - but I'm finally to a point now where things are settling down. Here's hoping that the lull will continue at least until the holidays hit!

October marked an incredible month of firsts.  I'm still reeling from the multiple emotional highs. :)

(1) I blogged for the first time on the I Heart Presents blog, recounting my call story.
You can find it here: http://www.iheartpresents.com/2011/10/my-call-story-by-debut-author-natasha-tate/

(2) Book #1, AN INCONVENIENT OBSESSION, received a 4-star rating from Romantic Times. Yeah!!

(3) I saw my first book in the local Walmart, B&N, and Fred Meyers stores.  Talk about an amazing thrill!

(4) I presented a workshop, "22 Years from Start to Sold!" at the Emerald City Writers' Conference in Seattle with my good friend Candis Terry. (She wrote SECOND CHANCE AT THE SUGAR SHACK, which is a fabulous read, by the way, and can be found at http://candisterry.com/)

(5) I had my first ever book signing at the ECWC, and it was wonderful! I was so worried that I'd have to gamely smile while all the crowds passed me by and avoided eye-contact, but I actually sold books!  I especially appreciate all the lovely CBCers who took the time to stop by, and a special shout-out goes to Susan Mallery, to whom I owe EVERYTHING! Were it not for her, I'd still be writing those westerns that wouldn't sell!

(6) AN INCONVENIENT OBSESSION was on the Bookscan list of top 100 romance novels for two weeks running!! Woo hoo!

(7) Book #2, ONCE TOUCHED, NEVER FORGOTTEN, received a 4 1/2 star review from Romantic Times magazine.  The review said "Tate is to romance like peanut butter is to jelly, and she proves it once more in this breathtaking story featuring an unforgettable couple." I'll be quoting that one for years!!

(8) Book #4 was accepted for publication, with only one small round of revisions.

(9) I entered Romance Writer's of America's RITA competition with TWO books! I've only entered the Golden Heart as an unpublished writer, as my eligibility for more was limited by my publishing status. Entering the RITA as a published writer is a giant step in a romance author's career, and I'm thrilled to make yet another inroad on that well-groomed path!

(10) I've been offered another contract with Mills&Boon/Harlequin, only this time, it's for FOUR books!  Squee!  I feel like I've truly entered the ranks of the published, and that I can start calling myself a "real" author now!

I'm off to try my hand at Scrivener with book #5. I've heard such wonderful things about the software that I can't wait to try it out! Wish me luck, and I hope I can check back with you before another four months of silence elapse!

Getting ready for RWA conference and saying goodbye to my baby!

It's been a frenetically busy couple of weeks. My brother just got married to his beautiful sweetheart, my son heads off for college (with his younger brothers chomping at the bit to inherit his room and stereo equipment), and I'm gearing up for my first RWA conference as a published author!  It feels like I've been packing for days, and I'm pretty confident that despite my numerous lists of lists and "don't forget" reminders, I'm still going to leave something critical behind.

My lovely editor just accepted my revisions for book #3 and my wonderfully supportive agent just reminded me that at this time last year, we hadn't even met and I was still trying to fight my way out of the slush pile!!  It's amazing what one mere year can entail. The publishing goddesses have certainly be smiling on me! I guess 13 years in the trenches has paid off, and in a big way! I can't wait to share my good fortune with all my talented Modern/Presents sisters in NYC!!

Oh, and a loud shout-out goes across the pond to the amazingly articulate and kind reviewer juliemt at Cataromance, who just posted a marvelous review of AN INCONVENIENT OBSESSION.  Being compared to Lynne Graham and Michelle Reid is going to keep me floating on air for days!

Author Central

I spent the day today setting up my Author pages with Amazon, Amazon.uk, and Goodreads.  Needless to say, it was a day of techie fun without much in the way of writing.  Since I just finished my revisions for book #3, I suppose it's time I took a day off to play on the internet!
